In the Bay Village neighborhood of Boston, with its narrow streets, colonial architecture, glittering gas lanterns, and red brick sidewalks, one building has a small sign in front reading: Wm.S.Haynes Co. This is the home of the world's foremost maker of artist flutes, and has been for generations.

Master Silversmith William Haynes, the son of a sea captain and a school teacher founded the legendary company that still makes flutes for the world' s most prominent soloists, orchestral musicians, chamber musicians, jazz artists, and hobbyists. Now, more than a century after William Haynes set up shop, his company still crafts flutes and piccolos that reflect a passion for excellence.

When you play a Haynes flute, you join the ranks of some very distinguished world-class flutists, and follow in the footsteps of such great players as the legendary George Barrere and Jean-Pierre Rampal, as well as contemporary artists such as Michel, Debost, Claudi Arimany, Jeanne Baxtresser, Kathleen Chastain, and Gary Schocker.

Classic Model Flutes
The newest addition to the Haynes family, the Classic Model represents a collaboration between our workshops in Boston and Beijing. Made in Beijing, each flute is thoroughly tested in our Boston workshop before making its way to its new home. An excellent option for flutists on a budget.

Handcrafted Custom Headjoints
Haynes Headjoint Styles The William S. Haynes Company manufactures four styles of headjoints for our handmade flutes at no extra cost. These options complement the musical needs I have of flutists in terms of tone and response. All Haynes headjoints possess rich dark sounds with lively response. Each Haynes headjoint is unique and special. Below find a description which will assist you in describing the advantages and differences of each style.
MS1 Our most popular style. This headjoint cut is square with undercutting, light over-cutting, and a comfortable modern lip plate. The MS1 style has moderate resistance. It is an excellent headjoint suitable for most playing styles. MS2 This headjoint variety has been popular in Europe for a decade and now is gathering momentum in other regions. It has heavier under/over-cutting than our MS1 yet is more free-blowing. The sound is brilliant with an emphasis on higher overtones. MS3 Similar to MS2, yet even less resistant due to the use of a slightly lower riser (wall). This works well for the flutist looking for maximum control and sensitivity. PIEDMONT (PMT) This is our traditional style with no under/over-cutting, square hole or round hole (on request), and slightly larger lip plate modeled after vintage Haynes and Louis Lot flutes. It is also the type used for our gold Rampal model. This style of headjoint produces a deep dark sound with increased resistance.
